Carnival Firenze Review from Our Mexican Riviera Cruise

Welcome Aboard: Our Carnival Firenze Review from the Mexican Riviera

Thinking about booking a Carnival cruise but curious if the Carnival Firenze lives up to the hype? You’re in the right place. In this Carnival Firenze review, we’re diving into our full experience from a five-day Mexican Riviera sailing. We’ll walk you through everything from staterooms and food to activities and hidden costs, so you can decide if it’s the right ship for your next vacation.

We sailed in January, which meant cooler weather and smaller crowds at some ports. That said, this cruise was also one of the most affordable options available at the time. We’re budget-conscious travelers, so we kept an eye on value throughout the trip.

What makes the Firenze stand out from other Carnival ships is its Italian-inspired theme. Carnival took over a ship originally built for Costa Cruises and gave it a makeover. The result? A blend of Carnival’s signature energy with a few nods to Italy; some subtle, some fun, and some a little over-the-top.If you’re new to cruising or just new to Carnival, we’ve got you. This post is full of practical tips, honest observations, and helpful info for making the most of your sailing. And if you’ve cruised before, we’ll help you compare Firenze to other ships you might’ve tried.

Getting to the Terminal

We departed from Long Beach, California. If you’ve never sailed from there, just look for the Queen Mary. Carnival’s terminal is right next to it, and the signage is easy to follow once you’re in the area.

There’s an on-site parking structure that costs $23 a day. It’s convenient, but like most cruise parking, not cheap. If someone’s dropping you off, there’s a designated zone for rideshares and taxis. Just be warned, it can get a little hectic.

As soon as you arrive, porters will be standing by near the parking garage. You can hand off your checked bags here. They’ll tag them and make sure they get delivered to your room. Just make sure your own luggage tags are attached beforehand.

Now, don’t forget your carry-on bag. You probably won’t see your checked luggage for several hours, so anything important should stay with you. Bring your ID, boarding pass, medications, valuables, and a swimsuit if you want to hit the pool early.

And here’s a big one. Carnival requires physical copies of your documents. No photos or screenshots. If you forget to print them, you might be able to get help at the terminal, but it’s better to show up prepared.

The terminal opens around 9:45 AM, but boarding doesn’t always start right away. We recommend arriving close to your assigned check-in time. Carnival doesn’t have a large waiting area, so showing up early won’t necessarily help you board faster.

Is Faster to the Fun Worth It?

We decided to purchase Carnival’s Faster to the Fun (FTTF) package. It’s a one-time fee per stateroom and gives you several perks that make embarkation and the rest of your cruise a little smoother.

One of the biggest benefits is priority check-in. While the regular line moved pretty quickly, we had our own line and breezed through security and the check-in desk. It felt a bit like skipping the line at an amusement park.

As soon as we boarded, our stateroom was ready. We dropped off our carry-on bags and headed off to explore the ship. It’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference when you’re not dragging a tote around for hours.

Our checked luggage also arrived earlier than usual. FTTF includes express luggage delivery, so our suitcases made it to the room before sail away.

There’s a special line at Guest Services just for FTTF guests. That came in handy when we had a quick question. Instead of waiting behind a dozen people, we were helped right away.

You also get priority reservations for main dining and specialty restaurants, just not if you’re doing “Your Time Dining,” which is what we chose. So, in that case, it didn’t really impact our dinner plans.

Another perk is priority tendering. If your ship uses a smaller boat to get you ashore at certain ports, you’ll be on it faster. Finally, when the cruise ends, you get priority debarkation. You can choose to be among the first off the ship, or take your time.

For us, FTTF was absolutely worth it. It helped us start the trip with less stress and more time to relax. But if you’re okay with waiting or you’re sailing on a shorter cruise, you might skip it and still have a great time.

Our Interior Stateroom: Small but Surprisingly Functional

We booked one of the cheapest rooms on Carnival Firenze, a standard interior stateroom. And honestly? It worked out great.

Interior rooms don’t have windows, so if you like total darkness for sleeping, this is the way to go. I actually prefer it. It helps me sleep in without the morning light nudging me awake.

Layout and First Impressions

Our room had a bit of an unusual layout. Instead of walking into a hallway between the closet and bathroom like most cabins, we entered directly into the main sleeping area. It gave the room a more open feeling right away.

Space is tight, no surprise there. But there’s enough room to walk around the bed and access everything without feeling cramped. The king bed took up most of the floor, but we had two nightstands, each with its own reading light, and a small desk with a mirror. Perfect for quick touch-ups or doing a little work if needed.

Storage and Outlets

Storage was… adequate. Not generous, but manageable. We had one full-length closet and another section with shelves, a safe, and a couple of small drawers. There’s also space under the bed for large suitcases. Definitely use that.

Now, let’s talk power. Outlets were surprisingly plentiful. Between U.S., European, and Chinese-style sockets, plus a few USB ports, we stayed fully charged the entire cruise. Bring a travel adapter and you’ll be in good shape.

Comfort and Cleanliness

The bed was firm but comfortable, and we were given four decent pillows. Linens were basic: just a blanket between two sheets, but it kept us warm enough at night. The overall decor was simple, with neutral tones and a picture of Italy above the bed that added a bit of charm.

Noise levels were low, even though we were near the elevators. We heard occasional hallway chatter, but nothing that disrupted our sleep.

The Bathroom Setup

Cruise ship bathrooms are never spacious, but this one was functional. The shower had sliding doors instead of a curtain, which we always appreciate. Water pressure was solid, and the hot water lasted through every shower. Counter space was limited, but the small built-in shelves helped us stay organized.

There was also a small nightlight built into the closet area. It turned on automatically when you walked by. A small touch, but really helpful during those late-night trips to the bathroom.

Final Thoughts on the Room

Overall, our stateroom was clean, quiet, and functional. Yes, it’s compact. Yes, storage is limited. But for the price? It delivered everything we needed. If you’re comfortable staying organized and packing smart, this is a great way to save money and still have a cozy place to relax at the end of the day.

Things to Do Onboard Carnival Firenze

There’s no shortage of things to do once you’re on board Carnival Firenze. Whether you’re up for adventure, relaxation, or just a good laugh, this ship’s got you covered.

Daily Activities with the Fun Squad

The Fun Squad lives up to its name. Throughout the day, they host trivia, dance classes, scavenger hunts, and bingo. It’s easy to join in, and even easier to just sit back and watch if you’re not the competitive type.

If you’re new to cruising, these kinds of activities are a great way to meet people. You don’t need to plan ahead or dress up. Just show up and join the fun.

Games, Sports, and Outdoor Fun

There’s plenty of free-play options too. Mini golf, foosball, ping pong, and even a ropes course are all available. If you’re looking to stay active, you can head to the jogging track or the full fitness center. The gym has all the basics: cardio machines, free weights, and even group classes.

One surprise highlight was the sports court. You’ll find basketball, dodgeball, and now even pickleball. Yes, pickleball on a cruise ship.

Quiet Time? That’s Covered Too

Not everything is high-energy. If you prefer a little peace and quiet, check out the library or grab a board game. There are plenty of little nooks throughout the ship where you can unwind with a book or watch the sea drift by.

Carnival Firenze also has several lounges and shaded deck areas where you can relax between activities. Some of them are tucked away and perfect for a mid-afternoon nap or quiet conversation.

Pro Tip: Use the Carnival Hub App

The best way to stay on top of everything happening? Download the Carnival Hub app. It lists all the day’s activities, dining hours, and showtimes. You can even set reminders so you don’t miss something you were looking forward to.

Pools and Water Features on Carnival Firenze

Carnival Firenze offers several ways to cool off, catch some rays, or just enjoy the view. Whether you’re traveling with kids or just looking for a peaceful soak, there’s a spot for you.

The Lido Pool: Courtyard Style Comfort

The Lido Pool is the centerpiece of the ship’s outdoor space. Located on Deck 10, it sits right in the middle of the action. What makes it unique is the courtyard-style layout. It’s designed to feel like a sunny Italian piazza, complete with loungers, balconies, and decorative touches.

The retractable roof is a game changer. It means you can enjoy the pool no matter the weather. This pool was never too crowded during our cruise, likely because it’s enclosed and shaded.

Versilia Pool: The Sunny Day Party Spot

If you’re looking to soak up the sun, head to the back of the ship. The Versilia Pool, also on Deck 10, is where the party lives. It has a livelier vibe and tends to draw the outdoor crowd.

This pool is flanked by a couple of hot tubs and lots of loungers. On sunny days, it fills up quickly. Grab your seat early if you want to stay for a while.

Serenity Deck and Hot Tubs

There are six hot tubs throughout the ship. A few are located near the pools, and the rest are on the adults-only Serenity Deck.

The Serenity area is designed for relaxation. It features comfy loungers, shade umbrellas, and sea views. During our cruise, it was one of the most popular spots. You’ll want to arrive early to snag a seat.

WaterWorks: Big Fun for All Ages

Traveling with kids? Or just a kid at heart? Check out WaterWorks. This is Carnival’s splash-tastic water park, complete with slides and spray zones.

Even adults were lining up for the waterslides on sea days. It’s a great spot for families and a fun break from the usual poolside lounging.

A Few Tips to Know

If you’re hoping to swim laps, just know the pools are on the smaller side. They’re more for cooling off than for actual exercise.

There’s plenty of seating nearby, both in the sun and the shade. But those loungers go fast, especially on sea days. Get there early or keep an eye out for someone packing up.

Relaxation and Wellness Aboard Carnival Firenze

If you’re cruising to unwind, Carnival Firenze has some great options to help you slow down and recharge. Whether your version of relaxing involves a spa treatment or a good book by the sea, there’s a spot for you.

Cloud 9 Spa: Treat Yourself

The Cloud 9 Spa is the main wellness hub on board. You’ll find all the usual favorites here like massages, facials, and body wraps. They also offer aromatherapy and specialty treatments. It’s not the most high-end spa at sea, but it does the trick when you need a break from the buzz of the ship.

It’s a great choice after a long day exploring in port or when you’re ready to treat yourself to a little self-care.

Fitness Center and Outdoor Options

Need to keep up with your workouts? The fitness center on Carnival Firenze is well-equipped. You’ll find cardio machines, free weights, and even some group fitness classes depending on the schedule. The gym is clean and functional, though it can get a bit busy during peak times.

Outside, there’s a jogging track, sports court, and even a space for pickleball. Whether you’re in it for the steps or just want to work off a second dessert, it’s all there.

Serenity Deck and Quiet Spaces

For adults looking to escape the crowds, the Serenity Deck is meant to be your haven. This area is 18+, features padded loungers, and has sea views perfect for an afternoon nap or quiet conversation.

That said, it fills up fast. On our cruise, it was the most crowded Serenity area we’ve seen. If you want a spot, you’ll need to go early in the day. And they don’t really enforce time limits on the loungers.

If Serenity is packed, you can still find peace elsewhere. The Moda Bar was one of the few tucked-away spots without a ton of foot traffic. There are also quiet nooks around the ship near the library and tucked-away lounges where you can read, sip coffee, or just take a breather.

Family Fun on Carnival Firenze

Cruising with kids or teens? Carnival Firenze has a lot to keep younger travelers entertained and give parents some well-deserved downtime. The ship blends high-energy fun with spaces designed just for kids, tweens, and teens.

Camp Ocean: Big Fun for the Littles

Camp Ocean is where kids ages 2 to 11 can join age-based groups for activities, games, and crafts. It’s split into several categories: Turtles (ages 2-5), Penguins (ages 6-8), and Sharks (ages 9-11). Each group gets their own activities, so your little ones are with kids their own age.

They do a great job of keeping things exciting and safe. Think science experiments, art projects, and themed parties.

Circle C and Club O2: Cool Spaces for Teens

Older kids have their own hangouts. Circle C is for ages 12-14, while Club O2 is for ages 15-17. These spaces are more chill. Think video games, music, dance parties, and a little independence.

They’re supervised, but teens can come and go as they like. If you’re cruising with a teenager who wants a bit of space, this is a great setup.

Activities for the Whole Crew

Beyond the clubs, there’s plenty of family-friendly fun to enjoy together. The WaterWorks park is a blast. Waterslides and splash zones are great for cooling off while keeping the energy high.

You’ll also find mini golf, a ropes course, ping pong, and foosball on board. These are perfect for friendly family competitions or burning off energy between meals.

Whether your kids want to explore on their own or stick close to the family, there’s something for every age group.

Dining on Carnival Firenze: From Comfort Food to Italian Flair

Food is a big part of any cruise, and Carnival Firenze gives you plenty to explore. Whether you’re in the mood for a full sit-down dinner or a quick bite between activities, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

Main Dining Rooms: Classic with a Twist

Carnival Firenze has two main dining rooms: Michelangelo and Medici. These are included in your fare and offer a rotating menu every night. You’ll find cruise classics like shrimp cocktail and flat iron steak, but there’s also a light Italian influence.

One night we enjoyed Caprese salad. Another night, Indian-inspired vegetarian curry. And the service was always warm and attentive.

If you prefer flexibility, the “Your Time Dining” option lets you eat when you’re ready rather than sticking to a set schedule.

Lido Marketplace Buffet

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the Lido Marketplace is your go-to for casual, self-serve dining. From omelet stations to carved meats and comfort food, it’s got range.

It does get busy, especially during peak breakfast and lunch hours. Try going a little earlier or later to avoid the crowds.

Quick Bites and Grab-and-Go

Some of our favorite eats were from the fast and flavorful options:

  • Guy’s Burger Joint brings Carnival’s classic burgers with a bit of an Italian twist.
  • Tomodoro serves up taco and burrito creations with a Mexican-Italian fusion vibe.
  • Pizza del Capitano delivers fresh pies all day and night.
  • The Chicken Shack stays busy for good reason. Crispy chicken strips are served breakfast through lunch.
  • Il Mercato is a grab-and-go market with hot dogs, meatball sandwiches, and quick snacks.
  • La Strada Grill blends American comfort food with bold Italian flavors.
  • The Empanada Bar inside the Tuscany Lounge has savory and sweet handhelds, perfect for late-night munchies.

Specialty Dining: A Step Up

Looking for a special night out? Carnival Firenze offers several specialty restaurants:

  • Il Viaggio brings upscale Italian dishes inspired by regions across Italy. (Though gluten-free diners may want to double-check options ahead of time.)
  • Fahrenheit 555 is your classic steakhouse, perfect for date night.
  • Bonsai Sushi and Teppanyaki combine fresh ingredients and fun presentation for a casual but flavorful meal.

There’s truly no shortage of variety. Whether you’re team buffet, love table service, or want to try everything once, Carnival Firenze has you covered.

Gluten-Free Dining on Carnival Firenze

If you’re cruising with a gluten allergy or sensitivity, Carnival Firenze offers some solid options. Like with most travel, a little prep and communication go a long way, but the staff here seemed ready to help.

Main Dining Rooms: The Best Bet

The main dining rooms were the most reliable when it came to gluten-free dining. Inside the Carnival Hub app, you can swipe left on the menu to reveal a full gluten-free version. It’s clearly labeled and easy to navigate.

The staff were knowledgeable and attentive. They answered questions, double-checked ingredients, and even made a special gluten-free banana cream pie one night. That was a lovely surprise and one of the better allergy-aware experiences we’ve had on a cruise.

Buffets and Quick Eats: Proceed with Caution

The buffet did have items labeled gluten-free, but as anyone with an allergy knows, buffets can be tricky. Cross-contact is a real issue. During the midnight buffet, we spotted someone dropping breaded chicken strips into the fries. Not ideal.

That said, when we asked the crew for help, they didn’t hesitate. One crew member happily made a fresh batch of fries using a dedicated fryer. It’s worth speaking up.

Specialty Dining: Mixed Results

This is where things got bumpy. When we boarded, the host at Il Viaggio told us they could accommodate gluten-free diners without advance notice. But when we arrived for dinner, the waiter and kitchen weren’t on the same page.

There was confusion about what was safe, and the options were extremely limited. For a restaurant with an upcharge, it didn’t feel worth it. If you have food allergies, this venue may not be the best fit.

The Verdict

Carnival Firenze does a decent job overall with gluten-free accommodations. The main dining rooms are your safest bet, and the staff will usually try to help if you ask. Just be cautious at buffets, double-check at specialty venues, and don’t hesitate to speak up.

And no, we still don’t recommend the gluten-free pizza. But here’s hoping they improve the crust soon.

Entertainment on Carnival Firenze

If you like your vacations with a side of music, laughter, and a little sparkle, Carnival Firenze delivers. The entertainment here is a mix of Carnival classics and a few fun Italian-inspired twists.

Main Theater Shows

The main theater hosts full-scale productions that feel like mini Broadway shows. On our sailing, we saw Color My World and Dear Future Husband. Both had solid vocals, lively dancing, and familiar songs you could sing along to. There was just enough storyline to tie it together, without being confusing or overly dramatic.

These shows are popular, but the theater has plenty of seating. Still, arriving early means a better view. It’s a nice way to wind down after dinner or kick off your evening plans.

Comedy Club

The Limelight Lounge is the home of stand-up comedy onboard. They offer family-friendly sets early in the evening and adults-only shows later at night. Be warned though—this place fills up fast. Standing-room-only is common if you don’t snag a spot early.

The comics brought good energy, and the audience was into it. If you like to laugh (and who doesn’t?), make sure to plan for at least one show.

Live Music and Lounges

Music is everywhere on this ship. The Atrium Bar is a central hub where rotating musicians perform throughout the day and evening. Whether it’s acoustic guitar or a jazzy sax, there’s usually something happening here.

If you’re looking for a more intimate vibe, the Piano Bar is a highlight. It’s a sing-along crowd, so don’t be shy. The place fills up quickly, but it’s one of the most memorable spots onboard.

For fans of live bands, there’s usually a rock group or dance band performing each night in the lounges. The ship leans into variety, so whether you like Motown, country, or pop, you’ll likely find a set you enjoy.

Pros and Cons of Carnival Firenze

Every cruise ship has its highs and lows. Carnival Firenze is no exception. Here’s what stood out during our sailing, and a few things you’ll want to be aware of before booking.

What We Loved

1. Unique Italian Theme

From the minute you step on board, the ship feels different. It’s light and playful with creamy tones, arches, and faux stone textures. The Piazza del Duomo and Lido courtyard give the ship a boutique vibe. It’s not exactly Florence, but it sets a fun tone.

2. Dining Variety and Quality

We didn’t have a bad meal the entire cruise. Specialty restaurants stood out with higher-quality dishes, but even the included venues delivered. We loved having dining choices you don’t typically see on other Carnival ships.

3. Comfortable Rooms

Our interior stateroom had a unique sideways layout. It actually made the space feel more open. There was enough room to move around, and the shower had real doors. No clingy curtains here.

4. Entertainment and Activities

The production shows were fun and easy to follow. The Fun Squad kept things lively with trivia, games, and poolside events. WaterWorks and the ropes course were a hit with guests of all ages.

5. Friendly Crew

Service was a bright spot. From housekeeping to wait staff, everyone we encountered was helpful and upbeat. No complaints here.

6. Support for Gluten-Free Guests

The main dining room offered a separate gluten-free menu, available in the Carnival Hub app. Staff were knowledgeable and willing to accommodate. Even the buffet staff fried fresh food in a dedicated fryer when cross-contamination was a concern.

What Fell a Bit Short

1. Crowded Serenity Deck

This adults-only space looked great but filled up quickly. Finding a lounger was tough unless you got there early. Hot tubs were packed too, especially with cooler January weather.

2. Some Dining Letdowns

Il Viaggio, a specialty restaurant, had very limited gluten-free options. Despite early reassurances, dinner service felt confused. For the added price, it missed the mark for guests with food allergies.

3. Ship Layout Can Be Confusing

Deck 3 doesn’t go all the way through, which can throw you off at first. Deck maps are only near elevators, and signs aren’t always clear. Expect to do some wandering until you get your bearings.

4. Popular Venues Fill Fast

The comedy lounge, karaoke, and certain music acts reached capacity fast. Same with the buffet during breakfast and lunch. Plan to show up early or be flexible.

5. Theme Leans Gimmicky

The Italian theme is fun, but it feels more like an Italian-themed restaurant than an authentic slice of Italy. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but worth noting if you’re expecting elegance over energy.

What We Paid

Let’s talk dollars and cents. If you’re wondering what a five-night cruise on the Carnival Firenze might actually cost, here’s what we spent and how it broke down.

The Base Price

Our sailing was advertised at $219 per person. That’s a pretty attractive price for a five-night cruise. But as most cruisers know, that number doesn’t tell the whole story.

Taxes, Fees, and Gratuities

After adding port taxes, fees, and choosing to prepay our gratuities, our total came to $848 for two people. That includes everything required before stepping foot on the ship.

We like prepaying gratuities because it’s one less thing to worry about during the trip. Plus, the crew works hard and deserves it.

Onboard Spending

Once we were onboard, we did our best to keep things budget-friendly. We didn’t buy a drink package, which helped keep the daily costs lower.

We spent an average of $26 each per day over five days. That included:

  • A couple of cocktails
  • One specialty dining experience
  • Our wine corkage fee

For us, this felt like a solid value. We had fun, ate well, and didn’t feel like we were constantly swiping our card.

Final Thoughts

The Carnival Firenze brings something a little different to the table. You still get that familiar Carnival fun, but with an Italian-inspired twist. It doesn’t feel like every other ship in the fleet. And for some folks, that’s a good thing.

A Unique Carnival Experience

From the theming to the layout, this ship has its own personality. It feels a bit more compartmentalized, especially around the Lido deck, which creates a boutique vibe. That can be a plus if you like cozier spaces. But it can also mean more crowded areas during peak times.

The Italian theming was fun and lighthearted. It won’t fool you into thinking you’re actually in Tuscany, but it adds charm. The decor gave the ship a different look and energy, which we appreciated.

Who This Cruise is Great For

If you’re cruising for the first time, Carnival Firenze is a great place to start. It’s upbeat, entertaining, and easy to navigate once you get your bearings. Families, couples, and friend groups will all find things to enjoy. There’s no shortage of food, activities, or music.

If you’ve sailed with Carnival before and want something just a little different, this ship hits that mark. It still feels like Carnival, just with a splash of vino and pasta flair.

Would We Sail Again?

Yes, we would. We had fun, we felt taken care of, and we made great memories. The crew was kind, the food was solid, and the entertainment had range.

It’s not luxury cruising, but it’s not trying to be. Carnival Firenze delivers a fresh experience at a great price. And in our book, that makes it worth a spot on your travel list.
